How To: Make a Home Gym… The 7 best fitness accessories!

4 Apr

A few years ago I gave up my gym membership which is a pretty big deal for me given I’ve belonged to a gym since I was 15. I love running and body weight workouts, and working out from home is so much more convenient than driving or walking to the gym. Plus, doing so has made me more consistent and cut out excuses…now,  I’m more likely to simply get my workouts done first thing in the morning.

Home workout equipment has come incredibly far and DVD workouts like P90X and Insanity (I’m a graduate of both:) give you a gym quality workout without having to leave your living room. In fact, that’s the very idea behind many of my printable workouts on Fit Fab Cities! I found a couple of my favorite home workout fitness accessories that bring gym worthy results to you at home, plus simply make your workouts more fun! And I always love to try new fitness trends and workouts so I use the some money I would have spent on a gym membership to try out speicailty fitness classes like TRX and Barre.

Here are a my 7 favorite fitness accessories that make for a perfect home gym. You can go with just one thing or even all of them!

  1. TRX Suspension trainer: This allows you to do thousands of exercises using your body weight and you can anchor it to a door at home. You can check out my review of my favorite TRX class here.
  2. BOSU Ball: stand on it while doing shoulder presses, curls or squats to get an added core bonus or use it for some killer crunches.
  3. Kettelbell or Kettelbell Set: This is one of the best pieces of fitness equipment out there! You’ll get a cardio burn (up to 20 calories per minute!) plus strengthen and tone every muscle in your body. But make sure you learn how to use it with proper form first so you don’t get injured!
  4. Dumbbells: It always great to have a few sets of dumbbells at home. I like these since the vinyl covering will help protect your floor from scratches.
  5. Jumprope: 10 calories per minute…simple, easy, effective cardio in a hurry!
  6. Bodylastics Resistance Bands: These are a great compliment or alternative to dumbbells and I love this Bodylastics set since it has many different levels of resistance. In fact, you can even stack a few together to really feel the burn! Plus it comes with door anchor attachments and the bands are super strong so you don’t have to worry about them breaking.
  7. Stability ball: Perfect for core work, sit on it for shoulder presses, lay down for chest work, prop your feet on it for pushups or use it against the wall for squats. It’s an inexpensive accessory that will really amp up your workouts!

Workout Video: Total Body Tabata Interval Workout (HIIT)

22 Mar

It’s time for another tabata interval workout video! This one’s a little different then the previous tabata video… instead of all cardio, this workout alternates a cardio move with a strength move so you get your heart rate going and you build strong muscles, all at once.

Tabata protocol means alternating 20 seconds of high intensity work with 10 seconds of rest and repeating that pattern in 4 minute segments. It’s one of the most effective ways to burn calories and increase you fitness, plus it’s a go to for celebs like Jessica Biel and Vanessa Lachey.

You can follow along and get the full workout with this video and feel free to go through 2 or 3 times if you need an extra challenge.

You can check out the other tabata workout video here.

Workout Video: Abs

23 Feb

I don’t know about you but I’m always on the hunt for new abdominal workouts. I tend to work my abs at the end of my strength workouts and by that time I’m usually looking to get out of the gym and well, that makes skipping the core work pretty enticing. That’s why I love to try different exercises and new routines so I have something to look forward to as oppose the the standard stability ball crunches and leg lifts.

Given that, I put together some of my all time favorite moves for this 4 minute ab workout video and I hope it gives you some new things to try with your workouts. I was sore after one time through but feel free to repeat it once or even twice… I know you hard cores (pun intended) are out there;)

Printable Workout: 35 minute booty toning treadmill sweat session

14 Feb

No need to worry about being bored on the treadmill if you bring this workout with you! There are intervals, sprints and lots of hills making this workout ideal for torching calories and totally toning your legs and glutes. So when it comes time for those incline sprints don’t think of them as intense work intervals think of them as instant butt lifters;)

After a warmup the workout is broken up into three sections: the first section is a powerwalk up a steep hill, the second section is entirely on an incline and alternates jogging  and running, the third section alternates sprinting up a hill with walking or jogging. Feel free to do on or two of the sections and if you’re looking for an advanced workout you can try all three. You cal also try adding just one section into your regular jog for a bit of variety.

Tips

  • To modify try walking the workout instead of running or jogging. The changing incline will give you a great workout without needing to up your speed.
  • The speeds and inclines I’ve used are just a guide…feel free to modify up or down if you need to. This is especially true on sections B and C which are pretty intense.
  • This workout is intense with sprints and hills so take as many breaks as you need to and drink plenty of water!

Printable Workout: The Fab 15 – Total Body Workout

7 Feb

What do these lovely ladies have in common…Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie, Sophia Vergara, Penelope Cruz, Minka Kelly and Brooke Burke?Well, successful careers, amazing style and killer curves courtesy of one Gunnar Peterson. Gunnar is one of my favorite celebrity trainers and he’s the go to guy for actresses, models, musicians and even professional athletes who count on being in amazing shape and super fit for their jobs.

One of my favorite things about Gunnar’s workouts is that he combines cardio, upper body, lower body and core exercises in each session. This principle not only inspires many of my own personal workouts, but it also inspired this printable one …“The Fab 15- Total Body Workout”. Combining all these exercises is one workout keeps your heart rate up and works multiple muscle groups at once turning your body into a fat and calorie burning, muscle toning machine. It also keeps you from getting bored and ensures your workout is over and done in no time. After all, we have much better things to do then spend all day at the gym…things like scouring Pinterest for new recipes, home inspiration or adorable puppy pictures, right? (FYI if you’re not on Pinterest yet, then go…go now… but be warned it might take over your life;)
